Simon is a Transport Planner from South-West London. His job involves enabling members of the public to take up more sustainable means of transport such as walking and cycling, and so it is perhaps no surprise that he is an active lifestyle practitioner himself, who run commutes and cycles to work on a regular basis.
Simon was introduced to running and cycling at an early age, when his parents enrolled him in his local athletics club. As keen runners and cyclists themselves, Simon’s mum and dad inspired him to stay active as a child by cycling to school, and he has continued to do so ever since. When he’s not heading into work on his bike, he run commutes to the office covering 7.2 miles in exactly one hour – which is often faster than public transport.
To stay motivated, Simon likes to keep a race in his calendar, and he is currently training for his next marathon event. In addition to run commuting, he runs with the Clapham Chasers, his local running club, and he likes to participate in a few triathlons each summer to keep him on his toes. Simon has completed marathons in both Malta and Budapest, and likes the fact that he can combine a holiday with a race overseas.
What Simon loves most about Run/Cycle Commuting
When we asked Simon what he loves the most about run commuting, he told us, “I love the flexibility it offers, you can be mix up your route and pace of your run, you can also combine with other forms of transport such as the train which provides a shorter distance one way if need be.” When it comes to cycling to work, Simon said, “The thing I love most is the efficiency- you can’t beat it in London! Trains, tubes and cars are so prone to delays, congestion and traffic that cycling to work really provides a fun, quick and consistent time to get to work.”
Keeping it simple, Simon runs and cycles in regular shorts and t-shirts, and tracks his performance with a GPS watch and Heart Rate Monitor. His top tips for those new to run/cycle commuting include planning ahead, packing the night before, and familiarising yourself with your route in advance.
When he’s not working, running and cycling, Simon loves nothing more than watching his favourite team West Ham (he’s a season ticket holder), and indulging in a good quality pizza washed down with a chilled Doom Bar beer!
